The Friends of the Paul McGuire Maritime Library annually sponsor one or two students allowing them to participate on a voyage on the training ship One and All.
The friends felt that it was important to help a young person who would benefit from such a voyage but who might otherwise miss out on one of these trips. We hope that they will find the experience rewarding.
The first recipients to have returned from this one week experience are very enthusiastic and found the experience very positive and successful.

WHAT IS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND HOW DO THE FRIENDS OF THE PAUL MCGUIRE MARITIME LIBRARY SUPPORT THIS?
One can define ‘youth development’ as:
...the ongoing growth process in which all youth are engaged in attempting to (1) meet their basic personal and social needs to be safe, feel cared for, be valued, be useful, and be spiritually grounded, and (2) to build skills and competencies that allow them to function and contribute in their daily lives." (http://cyd.aed.org/whatis.html)The definition above describes youth development as a process that all young people go through on their way to adulthood. As the definition implies, it is a process or journey that automatically involves all of the people around a youth—that is both family and community.
As a member of the Friends of the Paul McGuire Maritime Library you can be reassured that by partnering with youth in your local community that you are assisting to grow the potential of precious young South Australians.
This year’s voyage in May on the One and All provided your youth development scholarship holders, Leon Kitek and Avalon Oates (Avalon attend the meeting at the end of May 2011 to share her story with you) with an opportunity to create greater self belief; gain a sense of stronger self esteem and confidence; provide a meaningful life experience; make new friends; develop the knowledge and skills to communicate and negotiate and to connect with others.
